Rawhide is made by cleaning and scraping the flesh side of large whole fresh hides, removing the hair, washing the skin thoroughly, frame stretching to dry, and then sanding the inside smooth and applying oil conditioner to the top grain side. We do not bleach the skins, so they retain their natural colour when dried. Chosen hides are large with few or no holes, knife scores, stains, or blemishes. Rawhides are available whole or in pre-cut drum circles. The natural rawhide is extremely strong, and maintains the strength and integrity of the living skin.
Pre-cut rawhide cordage or babiche is available for drum frame lacing, snowshoes, etc. Rawhide cordage is a very useful fastener, when laced up wet it cinches extremely tight as it dries to secure and hold fast. It is extremely strong, lasts almost forever, and can be reused over and over again. Different sizes of cord are available, using deer, elk, moose or bison rawhide.
